Academy in Factory (AiF) is a relatively new concept in Malaysia, aimed at bridging the gap between academic learning and industry training. It is a training program that combines classroom learning with hands-on experience in a factory setting. This unique approach to education is gaining popularity in Malaysia, as it provides a more practical and relevant approach to learning.
The AiF program was first introduced in Malaysia in 2016, as a collaboration between the Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC) and the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI). The program aims to help young people acquire the skills they need to succeed in the manufacturing industry, which is a key driver of Malaysia’s economy.
The Academy in Factory program will offer as many as 300,000 job opportunities by 2025 across high-impact sectors such as the electrical and electronics (E&E), automotive, chemical and advanced materials as well as life sciences and medical technology subsectors to youth across the country.
Under the newly announced Budget 2023, there’s a RM5.3 million funding for AiF
It involves more than 25 companies/factories in sectors such as chemicals, life sciences & medical technology, semiconductors and automation.
One of the main benefits of the AiF program is that it allows students to gain practical experience in a real-world factory setting. This experience is crucial for students who want to pursue a career in the manufacturing industry, as it gives them a better understanding of the day-to-day operations of a factory. Students also have the opportunity to work with state-of-the-art equipment and learn the latest manufacturing techniques.
The AiF program is designed to be a comprehensive training program that covers all aspects of manufacturing, including production, quality control, and logistics. The program is divided into two phases, with the first phase focusing on classroom learning and the second phase on hands-on training in a factory setting.
During the classroom phase, students learn the theoretical concepts and principles of manufacturing. They also learn about the latest technology and equipment used in manufacturing, as well as industry best practices. In the second phase, students apply what they have learned in the classroom to real-world scenarios in a factory setting. They work alongside experienced factory workers and gain valuable experience in production, quality control, and logistics.
The AiF program is open to students from a variety of backgrounds, including school leavers, technical college graduates, and even experienced workers who want to upskill or reskill. The program is also suitable for those who are looking to start their own manufacturing business, as it provides them with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed.
In addition to providing practical training, the AiF program also helps students develop important soft skills such as teamwork, communication, and problem-solving. These skills are essential in any industry, and the AiF program aims to develop well-rounded individuals who are ready to succeed in the manufacturing industry.
The AiF program has been well-received in Malaysia, with many students and employers praising its effectiveness. The program has helped to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry training, providing students with a more practical and relevant approach to education. As Malaysia continues to develop its manufacturing industry, the AiF program is likely to play an increasingly important role in developing the next generation of skilled workers.
