The Total Industry Volume (TIV) of new motor vehicles registered in Malaysia in the first six months of 2020 was 174,675 units against 296,317 units registered in the corresponding period of 2019. The decrease is expected due to the Movement Control Order (MCO) since March 18 till 12 May 2020.
Nevertheless, there is an increased demand for the automotive service and repair industry, since every vehicle requires servicing. The government is also keen to transform the industry, introducing the Automotive Transformation Programme (ATOM) to provide accessible soft loans for automotive workshop operators.

Automotive technology is a program of study focusing on the mechanics and technology driving today’s cars. It helps you understand how to maintain and fix a vehicle, much like how a doctor diagnoses and treats a patient. Pursuing automotive technology as a career can be a lucrative opportunity for those who have a passion for innovation and problem-solving.

Automotive maintenance plays a huge role in the automotive industry, given that every vehicle (whether it’s a car, truck or motorcycle) needs to be serviced at least 2 – 3 timesa year.

Studying an Automotive Course in Malaysia

It depends on what Level you’re interested or qualified to pursue. There are two pathways, skills based (SKM/DKM/DLKM) & academic (Diploma in Automotive Technology).

In this article, we’re going to focus on skills based pathway, exactly what the 150 Jabatan Pembangunan Kemahiran (JPK) accredited training centres in Malaysia are offering – automotive course in Malaysia. The code for this program at SKM level is either:

TP-300-2/3:2013 AUTOMOTIVE AFTER SALES SERVICING (Old code) OR

G452-002-2:2018 – LIGHT VEHICLE – REPAIR SERVICE (New code)
G452-002-3:2018 – LIGHT VEHICLE – DIAGNOSTIC SERVICE (New code)

After that, you may further to either:
TP-310-4/5 Automotive Electrical Technologist;
G452-002-4/5:2017 After Sales – Service Operation/Service Management

However, if you decide to pursue an academic diploma in automotive technology after your SKM3 (TP-300-3:2014 / G452-002-3:2018), you may still do so, now even without SPM.

Entry Requirements & Qualifications

(i) Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia Level 2
(G452-002-2:2018 – Light Vehicle – Repair Service)

• NO SPM required
• Minimum age 16 years old and above
• Interested in automotive & like hands-on

(ii) Diploma in Automotive Technology

SPM / O-Level: Minimum of 3 credits including a pass in Mathematics

A Diploma in Automotive Technology is typically 2 – 3 years long, covering the basics of diagnostic, repair and maintenance of motor vehicles.

Upon completion of your Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia or Diploma, you can either choose to start working or continue on with a Degree in Motorsport Technology, Automotive Technology, Automotive Engineering, or even Mechanical Engineering.
